Inside, an ante-room leads into a spacious hall with galleries on either side. The Senate-House had been intended by Gibbs as part of a threesided court of buildings, but this, like Cockerell’s later scheme to cover the site of the Old Schools with Victorian structures, and Nicholas Hawksmoor’s earlier one to convert the centre of Cambridge into a grand classical forum, never came about.
