Jones’s early description of online identity refers to what is now termed social presence—the person we become when we are online and how we express that person in virtual space. An earlier study by one of us entitled the Electronic Personality (Pratt, 1996) supports the notion that one’s personality changes when interacting with technology.
The student may be physically present but psychologically absent. In the virtual classroom, however, if a student drifts away, that absence is noticeable and may have a profound impact on the group. Online learning has brought a whole new set of issues and problems into academics; as a result, instructors and their institutions have had to become more flexible and learn to deal with these problems.
