Children watched eagerly for his coming and begged for chips of ice, which were unhygienically sucked. Mailmen were still called "letter carriers" (the parcel post was not established until 1913), and the mail was delivered three times a day in residential districts and four times in business areas. Letters cost two cents postage, cards a penny, including the card. When you had something to dispose of, you hailed the junkman, who came driving through the alley calling "Rags, old iron," generally in a strong foreign accent.
